“People over here aren’t buying what you’re selling,” Karen replied when I told her the lessons God was teaching me about reverence. I chuckled inwardly.

In San Pedro, the coastal city in which we were now living, we had access to e-mail. My twin sister and I were enjoying something we never dreamed possible—regular contact even though I was in Africa. We discussed anything and everything. Since we were twins, I was especially intrigued with God’s work in her life and any parallels with His work in my life. Were these lessons God was teaching me through refugee work universal? If so, how would God teach Karen?

Karen told me about her church and all the things her family was learning. Her pastor was preaching a series of sermons on The Treasure Principle. Using the principles stated in Randy Alcorn’s small book by the same title, the congregation was being encouraged to trust God with their finances. And then at a mission conference the speaker incorporated the same theme. If unexpected money came in, would you be willing to give it to God?, he challenged.
